Relationships

MARIE ANTOINETTE: the yellow rose
After her appointment as the royal guard of Marie Antoinette, Oscar became friends with this fun-loving princess. Always being patient with the little mischiefs of the princess, she was also one of the few people whom Marie Antoinette trusted in the hotbed of intrigue, the Palace of Versailles. She watched her suffer after Fersen never letting her own feelings to meddle, she defended her when people were talking behind her back and she understood her frustration against the strict rules of Versailles. Marie Antoinette never realized Oscar's love for Fersen. When Oscar went to see the queen to resign from her position in the Royal Guards, Marie Antoinette was shocked but she accepted her request without questioning her further.

One of the most meaningful scenes with Oscar and Marie Antoinette is, in my opinion, the dance scene at a ball. To prevent people gossiping more about the relationship between the queen and Fersen, Oscar dressed up for a ball and she asked the queen to dance before Fersen did. People were shocked by this unexpected surprise and couldn't get to see the queen again with Fersen as they had been expecting. This indicates the unspoken understanding of each other's feelings.

Oscar remained loyal to Marie Antoinette until the early phases of the Revolution. Even then, the queen forgave her for treason which is probably the biggest proof of their deep friendship.

Both woman on the same age completely opposite in personality and ideals fell in love with the same person. On the whole Oscar's relationship with Marie Antoinette shows us how distant she is from her feminine side compared to Marie Antoinette.

ROSALIE: the pink rose
Rosalie, a poor little girl living in Paris, lost everything when her mother got hit by a noble's carriage and died, she swore to avenge her mother's death and walked all the way to Versailles to find the woman in that carriage. Thus, she met Oscar. Listening to her story, Oscar promised her to help her take her revenge. Rosalie started living in the Jarjeyes Chateau as Oscar's adopted little sister. Oscar taught her swordfighting, history and palace manners. Rosalie admired her in every way and grew a deep love for her knowing that it would be an unrequited one.

Rosalie's mother had told her that she was actually born noble and her real mother's name was Martine Gabrielle. Besides the killer of her mother who raised her, Rosalie looked for her real mother. Unfortunately these two people turned out to be the same person, Madame de Polignac, Marie Antoinette's closest friend. Unable to kill her real mother, Rosalie moved to her chateau when Madame de Polignac threatened to start a horrible gossip about Oscar. Rosalie never told the real reason she's leaving the Jarjeyes Chateau. Later she escaped from Madame de Polignac and joined the revolutionists.

Rosalie was very dear to Oscar with her sweetness and nobility. She got so touched by what Rosalie had gone through that she made a rush decision to help her. Yet, she let her go when she wanted to 'live' with her real mother without questioning her. As Oscar said Rosalie was like a spring breeze, sweet, delicate and noble.

FERSEN: the orange rose
After the arrival of Fersen, a handsome and charismatic count from Sweden, to celebrate the new king and queen, Oscar and Fersen became good friends and confidants. Nevertheless, Oscar had different feelings for Fersen. She was one of the few people that knew about the love affair between the queen and Fersen. Yet, despite her own feelings for Fersen, she remained a loyal friend and never told him about her deep love for him.

However, one night she dressed in women's clothes for the first time in her life to go to a ball. No one, not even Fersen, could recognize her. Everyone was dazzled by the beauty of this unknown person. But later, Fersen got very suspicious and eventually found out this beautiful young lady's secret identity. Heartbroken, Oscar said that she couldn't keep on seeing him and parted her ways with Fersen.

This event proved the existence of the passionate young woman in Oscar that was struggling to live her life freely. Also, Oscar found out that she had never truly become a man. Thus, she resigned from her position as a royal guard to avoid seeing Fersen. This was the second most radical decision she made to dedicate herself to be a man completely.

ANDRE: the red rose
When General Jarjeyes appointed a nanny to take care of Oscar and requested her grandson, André to be a role model for her to become a man, little did he know that his clever plan would backfire? The two kids grew up together, knowing each other better than anyone else. André, despite her lower status, loved his childhood friend and this love grew up to be a vow that one day that he would sacrifice his life for her.

André's love was so dedicated that he was the most suffering character in the series. He patiently endured his bleeding heart when he knew that Oscar loved Fersen. He even sacrificed his left eye in a fight to protect her.

Oscar was always greatful to him for he was always by her side but never knew his companion's feelings until the night Oscar decided to start a new life and resign from the Royal Guards. She told him that she no longer needed him by her side and that he was free to go on his way. André not being able to stand the thought of not being near Oscar anymore, confessed his love in desparation, kissing her passionately and nearly raping her. After this incident, Oscar was miserable for she hadn't noticed this before and made André suffer all this time.

After all, André found a way to be beside his loved one. He joined the French Guards that Oscar was going to conduct to show that his way was to be beside her always.

As the Revolution came closer, Oscar didn't only become aware of what the Parisians were going through all these years but also of the fact that her feelings for her lifelong companion were changing. She confessed her love just two days before the outbreak of the Revolution. Crying, she asked André how he could love someone that made her suffer for years. André answereed that he had loved her since he was born. That was the night their love bloomed.

Unfortunately, André finally realized his vow in a clash the next day. He got shot by a bullet that was intended for Oscar, while, I presume, he was watching her back. He died shortly after, leaving a wailing Oscar behind.

André's death devastated Oscar but fortunately she wouldn't have to endure it for long.
